Senior & Disabled Housing

With 75 apartments in six communities countywide where tenants have the choice of exterior or interior entrance. All apartments have a combination living-dining area, kitchen, bedroom, full bath and storage space. Each provides laundry facilities and a community room for social activities.

Applications for elderly and challenged are available at the Sparta office or in each buildings. Most buildings currently have waiting lists.

Family Housing

In August 2014 the housing authority acquired a 16 unit complex for families in Tomah. It had previously been a tax credit construction with USDA-Rural Development loans and rental assistance from HUD, distributed by WHEDA. There are 14 two-bedroom units and 2 three-bedroom units.

Housing Choice Voucher

The Housing Choice Voucher is a federal program funded by The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and administered by Monroe County Housing Authority. It lets you choose your place of residency, renting from a private landlord.  Tenants will pay 30% to 40% of their adjusted gross income and HUD will pay the remaining amount to the landlord.  This program serves people of all ages of very low income families, elderly & challenged.  Allowances for utility costs are considered when determining rent.  Some restrictions apply.

  • Tips & Cash income

  • Social Security Benefits

  • Federal & State SSI

  • Child Support & CTS (Caretaker)

  • Unemployment

  • Pensions

  • Interest income from land and assets

  • W2

Applications for HUD housing must be picked up at the office only during times the waiting list is open.
